It reacts with amines, forming a hydrazone intermediate which reacts with the carbonyl group of polycarboxylic acid to form an ester or amide linkage. The reactivity of 3-amino-2,2-dimethylpropanol is increased in the presence of a supercritical fluid. This reaction mechanism has been shown in coatings that contain both 3-amino-2,2-dimethylpropanol and polyols.
