2-Amino-5-methyl-3-thiophenecarbonitrile is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of quinoline derivatives. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis and dehydrating reactions. This compound has been shown to be active against virulent strains of bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, and can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. 2-Amino-5-methyl-3-thiophenecarbonitrile has also been found to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but not Mycobacterium avium complex. The mechanism by which this drug inhibits bacterial growth is unknown.
