a-Artemether is a sesquiterpene lactone that is active against amoebae. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of infectious diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis. a-Artemether has long-term toxicity, which may be due to its ability to cause hepatic steatosis. A study on drug interactions found that a-artemether can inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, resulting in lower plasma concentrations of drugs that are substrates for these enzymes.
