It has been shown to have a high degree of cytotoxicity and be mutagenic. 2-Amino-4-methylthiazole is also an antimicrobial agent, which can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections. 2-Amino-4-methylthiazole binds to the active site of acetylcholinesterase by forming a covalent bond with a nitrogen atom in the carbonyl group of the enzyme. This inhibition prevents hydrolysis of acetylcholine, resulting in acetylcholine accumulation, which causes toxic effects such as increased heart rate and muscle cramps.
