Acetic acid (2-methylcyclohexyl) ester is a liquid phase reaction product of hydrogen peroxide and butyric acid. It can be used in organic synthesis to produce hydrogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenols and cresols. The reaction proceeds by the addition of an organic solvent, such as deionized water or an organic solvent, to the reaction vessel containing acetic acid (2-methylcyclohexyl) ester. The mixture is then electrolyzed at a high voltage to produce hydrogen peroxide and butyric acid. The process may be repeated until all of the butyric acid has been consumed. Acetic acid (2-methylcyclohexyl) ester is also used for kinetic studies in which its progress towards completion can be measured using chemical kinetics.
