2-Amino-4-hydroxybenzothiazole is a chemical that can be produced from 2-amino-5-nitrobenzothiazole. It is used in the production of dyes and pigments, as well as in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. This chemical has been found to have a number of transformations, including photodegradation and biodegradation. The mechanisms are not fully understood, but it is thought that the transformation is due to the presence of an electron withdrawing group in the molecule. Hydroxylamine may react with this group to produce a hydroxyl radical, which can cause oxidative damage to DNA and other biomolecules. 2-Amino-4-hydroxybenzothiazole may also undergo photolysis or direct oxidation by oxygen radicals under aerobic conditions.
