Descrizione:Astacene is a protein that has been isolated from the anthelmintic drug astacin. It is a member of the family of carotenoids and its structure includes a double-ring system with two conjugated double bonds, each containing one nitrogen atom. Astacene has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in experimental models. Astacene binds to the α subunit of DNA gyrase and inhibits disulfide bond formation, which prevents replication. The biochemical properties of astacene suggest that it could be used as an inhibitor for other enzymes involved in energy metabolism or infectious diseases.
