Atorvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug that belongs to the class of statins. It is used for the treatment of dyslipidemias, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions. Atorvastatin is a prodrug that is metabolized by the liver into atorvastatin calcium, its active form. The metabolism of atorvastatin occurs through side-chain cleavage by cytochrome P450 enzymes and hydroxylation by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This drug has been shown to inhibit atherosclerotic lesion formation in mice with diet-induced hypercholesterolemia. Atorvastatin also inhibits miapaca-2 cells without affecting human serum lipid profiles, which may be due to its low potency.
