This compound is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of some pesticides (e.g., biphenyl) and pharmaceuticals (e.g., benzalkonium chloride). 4,4'-Azoxydiphenetole interacts with acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction to produce muscle contraction and can also be used for antiseptic purposes (e.g., in mouthwashes). 4,4'-Azoxydiphenetole and its homologues have been shown to have a reaction rate that varies with the activation energy of the reaction.
