It can be prepared by refluxing dimethyl phosphite and phosphonate in the presence of methyl acetate and anhydride, or by heating with a heterocyclic compound. Methyl 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-oxoacetate has been shown to be an analog of pulvinones and phosphonates, which are compounds that have antifungal activity.
