It has been used as a coupler in the textile industry. The compound is also a component of hair dyes, where it reacts with the natural amino acids present in keratin fibers to produce a permanent color. 2-Methyl-1-naphthyl acetate has also been used as a reactive dye for cellulose and lyocell fibers, but it is not selective and may react with other compounds.
