This chemical also reacts with water vapor in the air to form nitrobenzene, a known carcinogen. The reaction mechanism involves an electron transfer from BNC to oxygen molecules followed by the formation of nitrobenzene. The detoxification enzymes include glutathione S-transferase and cytochrome P450 reductase.
