Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that, when mixed with water, has antimicrobial activity. It is used as a preservative in a wide variety of products and materials, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and contact lenses. Benzalkonium chloride has been shown to be effective against bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This chemical is also used to treat eye disorders and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Benzalkonium chloride is highly soluble in water and can be found in human serum. In addition to its antimicrobial activity, benzalkonium chloride also shows some toxicity to humans. For example, it can cause irritation of the skin or eyes and may have an adverse effect on the central nervous system.
