It has two phenyl groups and one hydroxyl group. The molecule can exist in two forms: cis (Z-form) and trans (E-form). The cis form has a higher boiling point than the trans form. In addition, this substance can be detected by its characteristic absorption bands in the IR spectrum. This monomer is also useful as a chelate ligand for metal ions, such as magnesium and calcium, which have an affinity for primary amines.
