4-Bromo-N-methylbenzamide is a synthetic compound that inhibits the mitochondrial electron transfer system, which is a series of redox reactions that transfer electrons from reduced substrates to oxygen. These reactions are important in cellular respiration and energy production. 4-Bromo-N-methylbenzamide has been found to inhibit ubiquinone reductase, an enzyme involved in the respiratory electron transport chain. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the rate of oxidative phosphorylation, which is the process by which ATP is synthesized in mitochondria. 4-Bromo-N-methylbenzamide also prevents desulfurisation and causes an increase in short chain fatty acids and lactic acid. This inhibition ultimately leads to cell death by apoptosis or necrosis.
