It reacts with radical species and photochromic compounds, and is also used in the photoresponsive chemistry of imidazolyl radicals. The rate of this reaction is increased upon irradiation. 2-Bromo-4-iodobenzaldehyde absorbs light at wavelengths between 300 nm and 450 nm, with an absorption coefficient of 0.00002 cm−1 M−1. It has a high chemical stability and does not undergo hydrolysis or oxidation reactions.
