It is produced by the oxidation of phenylalanine and is excreted in urine as benzoic acid, a water-soluble substance. BPAOH was identified as a metabolite of Phenylpyruvic acid in human urine and plasma by chromatographic analysis. The most common form of this compound has the chemical name 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-benzoic acid or 2-hydroxyethoxybenzoic acid (2HEBA). This compound can be found in plants, animals, and microorganisms.
