Benzofuran-5-carboxylic acid is a benzofuran derivative that inhibits the production of protein targets in cells. This leads to autoimmune diseases and anticancer activity. Benzofuran-5-carboxylic acid has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the RNA polymerase II, which is responsible for the production of messenger RNA (mRNA). This compound also inhibits the viral non-structural protein, NS1, which is involved in the replication of influenza A virus. It has been shown to inhibit the biosynthesis of chalcones, an important group of compounds found in plants with a variety of biological activities.
