Tert-butylhydrazine is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. It reacts with amines to form tert-butylhydrazones or hydrazones. The reaction mechanism for this process is a substitution reaction, which involves intramolecular hydrogen transfer from the nitrogen atom. This reaction can be catalyzed by moisture and it can also take place between two molecules of water. Tert-butylhydrazine reacts with chlorine to form terephthalic acid and hydrochloric acid. The structural analysis of tert-butylhydrazine shows that it has a pyrazole ring with one nitrogen atom in its structure and two hydrogen atoms on each side of the ring.
