Berberine is a chemical compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. It is thought to work by inhibiting the production of ATP in cells. This prevents the activation of protein kinase A and protein kinase C, which are enzymes that regulate cell growth. Berberine also inhibits melanogenesis and can inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. Berberine chloride hydrate is an active form of berberine that has been used in animal experiments as an antibiotic against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It also has been shown to reduce skin cancer in mice when applied topically or orally. The structure of berberine is similar to adenosine nucleotide, which may explain its ability to inhibit ATP production in cells.
