Bremelanotide acetate is a synthetic peptide that stimulates the melanocortin receptors, which are involved in the regulation of sexual arousal and other functions. It has been shown to lower blood pressure in rats with hypertension. Bremelanotide acetate has also been used as a diagnostic agent for measuring cardiac effects in humans. The pharmacokinetic properties of this drug have been studied and found to be similar to those of sildenafil, a well-known drug used for erectile dysfunction. Bremelanotide acetate is not toxic when administered orally or by injection and has been found to have no significant side effects. This drug is being developed as an alternative treatment for skin cancer, although it does not help with other types of cancer.
