It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the synthesis of amines and other organic compounds. The enzyme isomerase catalyzes the isomerisation of cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane to trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane. This reaction proceeds by the transfer of two hydrogen atoms from the amino group of one molecule to the carbonyl group of another molecule. (+/-)-trans-1,2-Bis(2-mercaptoacetamido)cyclohexane catalyses this reaction in a reversible manner with high yields and high enantioselectivity.
