Descrizione:3-Bromomethyl-2-methylpyridine is an organic compound that belongs to the group of pyridines. It can be prepared by the bromination of 2-methylpyridine at the 3 position with bromine in an inductive deactivating manner. This reaction has been shown to have regioselectivity and is unsymmetrical, as there are three possible products: 3-bromo-, 2-bromo-, and 1-bromomethylpyridine. The radical mechanism of this reaction is a two step process. In the first step, a hydrogen atom from the methyl group leaves and forms a methyl radical. The second step occurs when the radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from another molecule of 2-methylpyridine, which then becomes a methyl radical as well. This creates a dimethylated product and regenerates the starting material.
