The substrate reacts with catechols to form benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. The reaction is dependent on the density of cells and the concentration of substrates. 4-Bromo-3-chlorotoluene also acts as an analog for benzoate in this reaction. This chemical reacts with pseudomonas, causing it to produce toluene.
