1-Bromo-4-phenylbutane is a bromohydrin that is used in the manufacture of other chemicals. It is also used as a solvent and in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Hydrolysis of 1-bromo-4-phenylbutane yields hydrochloric acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, and halides. The reaction proceeds by elimination of hydrogen bromide to form an alkene, which then reacts with water to form an alcohol and a carboxylic acid. 1-Bromo-4-phenylbutane can be used as a specific ligand for enzymes or as a pheromone.
