3-Bromo-5-iodopyridine (3BI) is a precursor to 3-amino-5-bromopyridine, which is used as a dyestuff. It can be used in the production of dibromoethane, an acetoacetate and diazonium salt that produces ethyl acetoacetate when treated with ethyl alcohol. 3BI can be used to prepare bromine compounds by reacting with hydrogen bromide in the presence of a catalyst such as aluminum chloride or zinc chloride. The reaction occurs in two steps: first the bromine atom leaves the molecule and then attaches to another molecule. This process is called electrophilic substitution.
