Bismuth subsalicylate is an antimicrobial agent that has been used to treat bowel disease. It has also been shown to reduce the symptoms of infectious diseases, such as diarrhoea and urinary infections. Bismuth subsalicylate may work by preventing bacteria from adhering to the lining of the intestine, inhibiting their growth and reproduction. This drug has a redox potential (E°) of -0.81 V vs NHE and can be used as a reducing agent in organic chemistry. The coordination geometry is octahedral with six equidistant bismuth atoms around a central salicylate ion. Probiotic bacteria have been shown to produce salicylic acid or its derivatives, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in the prevention of inflammatory bowel disease.
