2-(Boc-amino)ethanethiol is a chemical compound that can be used as a model system in biological studies. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells, and is an ester of a terminal residue and an ester hydrochloride. 2-(Boc-amino)ethanethiol binds to lysine residues on the surface of glucocorticoid receptors, which are found in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells. This binding inhibits the ability for these receptors to bind with hormone molecules, thereby inhibiting their function. 2-(Boc-amino)ethanethiol also reacts with glutathione via a disulfide bond to form glutathione S-2(Boc)-thiourea, which is more stable than its precursor glutathione S-2(Boc).
