Berberine sulfate trihydrate is a drug that has been shown to inhibit the activity of protease enzymes in vitro and in vivo. Berberine sulfate trihydrate may be useful for the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases, including hepatic steatosis, which is characterized by an accumulation of lipids in the liver. Berberine sulfate trihydrate also inhibits the growth of human macrophages and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Berberine sulfate trihydrate is not active against bacterial cells, but it does inhibit nuclear DNA synthesis. This drug binds covalently to basic proteins and forms disulfide bonds with them, which inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification.
