2,2'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine is a derivative of benzidine. It has been used in the production of polyimides. 2,2'-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine is a component of a reaction solution containing an inorganic acid, such as hydrochloric acid or tetracarboxylic acid. Polyimides are used as laminates for their thermal expansion properties. They are also used to make radiation-resistant coatings and high-temperature insulation materials. Polyimides can be made by reacting a dianhydride with an amine. The amide group in 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine reacts with the amine in the polyimide to produce cross-links between polymer chains and increase the strength of the polymer.
