It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and acetonitrile. 4-Bromo-2,6-dimethylaniline has been shown to react with acid solutions to form hydrogen bromide gas and ammonium chloride crystals. The crystal x-ray diffraction pattern of the product shows it has a space group of P21/c. This reaction also produces acrylonitrile as a byproduct. The formation constants for this reaction are 1.1 × 10−7 at 25°C and 1.4 × 10−7 at 45°C for the dissociation of hydrogen bromide gas, and 3.3 × 10−5 at 25°C and 3.8 × 10−5 at 45°C for the dissociation of ammonium chloride crystals.
