5-Bromothiophene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester is an alkene that is used in the synthesis of molybdenum trioxide and other polyhalogenated compounds. It can be prepared by alkylation of 5-bromothiophene with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of carbon tetrachloride and a halide, such as bromine. The use of photophysical optimization has been shown to significantly improve the yield of this reaction.
