The biphenylene structure can be synthesized by sequential or simultaneous addition of bromine to phenol with sodium hydroxide or potassium tetrachloroplatinate. This chemical compound can be made into two isomers: 3,4-dibromobenzene dicarboxylic acid and 3,4-dichlorobenzene dicarboxylic acid.
