Baohuoside II is a phenolic acid and triterpenoid saponin that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Baohuoside II has been shown to induce cell death in human breast cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme acetylcholine esterase. It also inhibits phosphatase activity and induces apoptosis in two types of human leukemia cells. Baohuoside II is found in plants belonging to the family Polygonaceae, such as Angelica Dahurica, which are used as food ingredients in China. The LC-MS analysis indicated that baohuoside II has a significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells with a detection sensitivity of 0.5 ng/mL. It also showed no toxicity for non-cancerous cells or for normal tissues at concentrations up to 15 μg/mL.
