It can be used as a light emitting compound for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). 2-Bromo-5-phenylthiophene can also be used as an efficient reagent for converting alkenes to alkanes. The colorless liquid has an odor that ranges from sweet to aromatic, similar to benzene.
