It is prepared by the reaction of hydrochloric acid and magnesium, followed by the addition of chloromethylmagnesium chloride. This compound has been shown to be effective as a fungicide against potato late blight and cucumber powdery mildew. Bis(4-fluorophenyl)methyl(chloromethyl)silane is colourless and has a boiling point of 158°C.
