It is used as a reagent in the synthesis of other heterocycles, such as imidazopyridines, aminopyridines and polyphosphoric acid. 2-Chloro-3,4-diaminopyridine can be prepared by condensation of chloroacetaldehyde with nitroethane followed by heating with ammonia to give the nitroamine. The condensation product is then heated with hydrochloric acid to produce 2-chloro-3,4-diaminopyridine.
