It is used as a preservative in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. 2-(Cyanomethyl)benzimidazole has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This chemical compound also has low toxicity and is used as a light-emitting tracer in biochemical research. 2-(Cyanomethyl)benzimidazole can be synthesized by reacting benzimidazole with the diazonium salt of potassium cyanide.
