Cyclopentanone is a cyclic ketone that has been synthesized in an asymmetric manner. The synthesis starts with the reaction of phosphotungstic acid and cyclopentanol to give a mixed anhydride. This mixed anhydride reacts with methylene chloride or chloroform to produce the desired product, cyclopentanone. Cyclopentanone is used as a model system for studying the cytotoxicity of fatty acids. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against tumor cells, and its mechanism of action involves the activation of detoxification enzymes by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Cyclopentanone also plays a role in the photochemical properties of x-ray diffraction data.
