4-Chloroisophthalic acid is an organic compound with the formula CHCl(COH)(OH). It is a white solid, soluble in water and polar organic solvents. 4-Chloroisophthalic acid can be used as a precursor to polyester resins and diazides. It can also be used as a ligand in coordination chemistry. 4-Chloroisophthalic acid crystallizes as monoclinic crystals with space group P21/n. The crystal structure contains one molecule of water per molecule of 4-chloroisophthalic acid. The reaction solution for this compound is typically 0.1 M NaOH at room temperature (RT), but it can also be prepared by adding chlorine to a solution of sodium bisulfate, followed by addition of xylene to the solution.
