1-Chloro-2-vinylbenzene is a chemical compound that is used as a cross-linking agent in the production of polymers. It has been shown to be an efficient electron microscopic contrast agent, which can be detected at concentrations as low as 1 part per billion. This chemical compound can be used for the chromatographic separation of organic compounds and is used to manufacture acrylonitrile. The reaction mechanism for 1-chloro-2-vinylbenzene is similar to that of other halogenated hydrocarbons: a hydrogen atom from the organic molecule reacts with an electron from the halogen molecule, forming an organic radical and a halogen radical. These radicals then react with each other, resulting in two molecules of 1-chloro-2-vinylbenzene.
