5-Cyano-2-hydroxypyrimidine is a cytotoxic compound that induces apoptosis. This drug has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cell lines and in tumor cells from patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia. 5-Cyano-2-hydroxypyrimidine binds to the phosphatidylserine receptors on the surface of the target cell and triggers an apoptotic cascade. This process leads to the activation of caspases, which cleave proteins essential for maintaining cellular function. The cleavage of these proteins leads to cell death. 5-Cyano-2-hydroxypyrimidine is also able to bind to annexin V, which is a protein found on the surface of cells undergoing apoptosis. Annexin V can be used as a marker for identifying cells undergoing apoptosis using flow cytometry analysis.
