Chloroxuron is a herbicide that inhibits the activity of the enzyme fatty acid desaturase. It is used to control weeds in agricultural fields. Chloroxuron has been shown to inhibit the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are necessary for plant growth and development. Inhibiting fatty acid desaturase prevents plants from synthesizing the polyunsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid (18:2) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3), which are important nutrients. This reduces the amount of these two fats in plants, causing them to become stunted and dry, as well as leading to death. Chloroxuron also has a synergistic effect with other herbicides such as 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D). This means that chloroxuron works more effectively when it is mixed with other pesticides than on its own.
