Clenbuterol belongs to the class of pharmacological agents that are used in analytical methods. Clenbuterol has been found to be an inhibitor of the mitochondrial enzyme succinate dehydrogenase and is also a potent inhibitor of beta-oxidation, which is the process by which fatty acids are converted into energy. In addition, clenbuterol has been shown to increase the number of mitochondria in muscle cells, leading to increased aerobic capacity and improved exercise performance. This drug also has a matrix effect on muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to induce synchronous fluorescence. Clenbuterol can inhibit nitrite ion reduction and dinucleotide phosphate synthesis, while it increases levels of cGMP and cAMP.
