It is an inhibitor of the enzyme fatty acid synthase that catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and other lipids. Caffeic acid 3-methyl phenethyl ester has been shown to inhibit tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production, which may be due to its ability to prevent protein synthesis at the level of translation. It also inhibits the uptake of hematopoietic stem cells and inhibits cellular proliferation. Caffeic acid 3-methyl phenethyl ester can be used for cancer therapy, as it has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in human HL60 cells following exposure to α-tocopherol.
