Catechol is a natural compound that has been shown to have synergistic effects with other antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to inhibit nitrite ion-induced DNA damage in human serum and to protect against metal chelates that are produced by nitrite ion. Catechol also regulates redox potentials and inhibits the growth of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Candida albicans. This drug may be effective as an inhibitor of enzymes involved in the formation of disulfide bonds in proteins.
