Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that works by blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in the stomach, leading to inhibition of acid production. It has been shown to be effective against gastric acid hypersecretion and peptic ulcer disease. Pantoprazole has a strong affinity for the inorganic base, which is an important factor in its high specificity. The molecular weight of pantoprazole is 536.2 g/mol and it has a solubility of 1.1 mg/mL in water. The compound breaks down into maltol (methoxy-pyridine) and hydroxide ions when combined with sodium hydroxide solution or chloride ion. Impurities found during synthesis can be removed by using acetonitrile as an organic solvent. Harmonization efforts have resulted in the elimination of sulfoxide impurities from pantoprazole production processes.
