2-Chloro-4-fluorotoluene is a chlorinated aromatic compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of synthetic cannabinoids. It can be prepared by reacting 2-chlorotoluene with chlorine and sodium carbonate, or by heating 2,4-dichlorotoluene with hydrogen fluoride at high temperature. This impurity can be removed from the final product by using analytical methods such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The molecule has two isomers: ortho and para. The para form is more stable than the ortho form due to steric hindrance, which leads to its increased reactivity.
