1-Chloroctadecane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is used as a hydrogen bond acceptor in the preparation of fatty acids. It is also used as an analytical chemistry model system for studying the kinetics and reaction mechanisms of reactions involving hydrogen bonding. 1-Chloroctadecane has been shown to have a role in autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, by inhibiting the production of antibodies. This compound also has supercritical properties, which allow it to be used as an analytical method for separating organic compounds with particle sizes between 0.1 and 10 microns. 1-Chloroctadecane can be extracted from acetate using a polymeric matrix, which allows it to be purified by crystallization or chromatography.
