It is used in the preparation of industrial chemicals such as piperazine, azobenzene, and caproic acid. 2-(2-Chloroethoxy)ethanol is also used in the synthesis of blood group antigens. The oxygen atoms of the methylene group are involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl group and the hydroxyl groups. The phase transition temperature for 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol is between −30°C and −10°C, which makes it useful for magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
